There’s a popular idea that cleaning a house is simple. Crank the pressure washer to the max, point it at the dirt and blast until it’s gone. It makes for satisfying videos online, and it’s also how a lot of homeowners end up with cracked stucco, pitted brick and water behind their siding.
Real professional cleaning works differently. Brick, stone, siding or stucco, different exteriors require different cleaning approaches, and knowing the difference is what separates a clean house from a damaged one.
Why Maximum Pressure Is Not Professional Cleaning
Think about a doctor who treats every patient with the strongest medicine on the shelf. It might work sometimes, but it’s going to hurt a lot of people along the way. Exterior cleaning is the same. Pressure is just one tool, and on many surfaces it’s the wrong one.
A professional looks at three things before starting a job. The equipment, meaning how much pressure and heat the surface can safely handle. The cleaning solution, meaning what will actually break down the specific stain or growth. And the technique, meaning nozzle choice, distance, angle and how the surface gets rinsed.
Condition Matters as Much as Material
Two brick homes built fifty years apart need very different care. The age of the surface, any existing cracks or loose mortar, old paint and the type of buildup all change the plan. A careful walk around the house comes first. The water comes second.
Different Exteriors Require Different Cleaning Approaches
Brick
Brick itself is hard, but the mortar holding it together is much softer. Heavy pressure can wash out mortar joints and chip the face of older brick, which opens the door to water getting in and freeze damage over the winter. Brick usually responds best to a targeted cleaning solution and moderate pressure, with extra care around older or crumbling joints.
Natural Stone and Stone Veneer
Fieldstone, flagstone and manufactured stone veneer are full of texture, and every crevice can hold moss, algae and dirt. Some stones are soft and can etch or discolor if the wrong chemical or too much pressure is used. Stone veneer in particular can be damaged if water is forced behind it. Gentle, solution-based cleaning is usually the safer path.
Vinyl and Painted Siding
Siding is built to shed rain falling from above, not water blasted from below. High pressure aimed upward can drive water behind the panels, where it gets trapped against the sheathing. Siding is a classic case for soft washing, which uses low pressure and a cleaning solution to kill mildew and algae at the root and rinse it away.
Stucco
Stucco is one of the most vulnerable exteriors to aggressive cleaning. It’s porous, it can crack, and high pressure can knock off chunks or push water into the wall system. Stucco calls for low pressure, the right solution and a patient hand.
Concrete and Hard Surfaces
On the other end of the scale, concrete driveways, sidewalks and patios can handle a lot more. For greasy or heavily stained concrete, heated water pressure washing and power washing is often the best tool for the job.
What Can Go Wrong With the Wrong Approach
Using the wrong method on the wrong surface can cause etching, stripped paint, broken seals around windows, damaged mortar, water intrusion and even voided warranties on some siding products. Many of these problems don’t show up right away. They surface months later as leaks, stains or mold inside the wall.
That’s why different exteriors require different cleaning approaches. It’s not about being fussy. It’s about protecting what is probably your largest investment.
